In the U.S. about 23.6% of women report that they have been threatened, have had attempted or completed physical violence, or unwanted attention by a current or previous intimate partner at some point during their life (Snider, MD, MPH, Webster, ScD, MPH, O Sullivan, PhD, Campbell, PhD, RN, 2009). A reliable, easy, economically feasible, and statistically significant assessment needs to be used to determine the possibility of recidivism in abusers. At the current time, there are multiple assessments available, and all of them have their limitations as well as their positives. The authors of the SARA developed the 10 risk factor Brief Support Assault Form for the Evaluati on of Risk (B-SAFER). These were constructed off of the 20 risk factors in the SARA and have shown some promise. It appears to have helped in Sweden to reduce recidivism rates (Kropp, PhD, 2008). B-SAFER is able to be used by police personnel who do not possess the knowledge and resources necessary for the SARA (Bowen, 2011). IPV Assessment for ED. An emergency department (ED) worker is going to constantly come across victims of IPV and be the first to recognize the dangers associated with recidivism. Due to this there has been a push for a brief assessment that can be done right in the ED to allow the workers to decide who is in the most need of the limited resources available, although information should always be given to all that are identified as victims of IPV.
